Welcome
to Summer 2009
Do you need to Write A Lot this summer?
Then this book is for you!
Do you want read a book that
will radically challenge how you understand Genesis 1?
Then this revolutionary, must-read book is for you...
John Walton, professor of Old
Testament at Wheaton Graduate College, argues that Genesis
1 is NOT about the creation of the material world, the
world that science talks about. Rather. Genesis 1 is about
the creation of functions (Days 1-3) and functionaries
(Days 4-6). Walton argues that we have read our own
material-ontology back into the thought world of the
ancient near east which operated with a
functional-ontology. He argues the Genesis 1 text is a
Temple creation story with God preparing the Temple (Days
1-6) and then taking up residence in Day 7 (“God’s rest” in
the ancient near east was when the deity would begin to
reign). So, Walton argues, on Day 7 God rested from the
preparation of the Temple to begin to take control of the
world that now is functional. Yes, God created the material
world, but that is not what Genesis 1 is about. Whatever
science was behind that, God was still the creator and
sustainer of it all. Go here to find read some of his book.

does not involve the belief that all things were made for
